hehe... This is gonna be the longest post of all til now. So feel like blogging about today's talk.
Went to a talk by the CEO, Mr Foong, of a local software company called Ecquaria. I found his talk very inspiring. He talked about his hindsights - mistakes he made from his university days til now, on the journey of setting up his own company and being the CEO.
As a summary, he have 10 points for being successful. I added in a few of my own explanation of the points.
Point 10 - Get real, be real. Mr Foong told his story. He said that he was passionate about computer science in the university, he did quite well and he had the chance to be attached to a very experienced lecturer. During that time, both of them came out with a very good idea (as told by him). Mr Foong then felt that he should develop more on that idea, since he felt it was very good. He went on to get more into his idea, but he was actually not being true to himself. Even though his idea may be good, his ability at that moment was still limited, but he insisted on doing it. In the end, he had to scrap the idea went on uni as normal. This shows that we must know our limits. But this does not mean that if out limit is here, we cannot improve. We still can, but we must be real as to how to improve or is there really improvement.
Point 9 - Stay faithful. What does faithful mean in this context? If you are an employee, you are expected to be faithful to the company. Nobody will hire someone who jop-hops frequently, etc. Another meaning to being faithful is that one must follow closely to his objectives. For example, if his idea is on a car, he can go ahead to talk about the different parts of a car, or even other 'almost alike' modes of travelling like the lorry, motorcycle, etc. But if he goes on to talk about things like aeroplanes, trains, then he is not faithful to his own idea. This is shown in software design in this example. If one has an idea, he can develop on that idea and even add in additional features. But he should never let the additional features overright the importance of the main features.
Point 8 - Be joyful. One must be joyful in the area that he is in. No point being in business if you feel that you cannot engage or gel deep into it. No point setting up this company and letting it fall halfway because you realise you are actually not into this sector.
Point 7 - Be hungry. One must always be hungry for more skills, more information, more opportunities. Mr Foong gave the example of comparing between a singaporean employee with a vietnamese employee. He told us that he once had 2 vietnamese employees who are in a team tgt. They worked on a tough project that last for about 2 weeks. At the end of the *forgot which day, think its the 3rd or 4th day*, they already completed the whole project. Mr Foong was surprised but he figured that due to the 2 not wanting to go back to their poor lives in Vietnam, they were constantly improving and sourcing for more opportunities. A singaporean will not be as hungry as them since most singaporeans live better lives compared to those from developing countries. The bottomline is that one must always improve himself and must always be ready to seek opportunies that may come anytime.
Point 6 - Stay humble. One must always be humble and accept that there will still be ways to improve himself. Only this way will one not be at a standstill when everyone else is improving.
Point 5 - Stay connected. One should always have wide areas of contacts. This will help if one needs to find ppl for sources or opportunities. *Actually this is common sense*
Point 4 - Plug into the community. One should not always be in the same group of people. It will help if one has experience of working with other people that are not in his regular group. This is for more work experience, more ideas, and is also linked point 5, when one is able to get more contacts.
Point 3 - Challenge your status quo. This basically means improving from what u are currently at. Ask yourself this question. If you already had a job with a considerably good pay, and you suddenly had a good idea that can benefit the world. Will you continue on your current job or will you leave your job to develop on your idea?
Point 2 - Obey the absolutes. I don really know why he said this but it means that one must follow what is right and what is wrong.
Point 1 - Enjoy your family and friends. This means that however hardworking u are, or however huge the workload is, you must always spend time for your family and friends.
yep there are many more things but i guess i'll keep it til other posts instead. LOL think no1 will read til here.
