Incredulously, Nicole tried again. Thud, thud, thud. The previously marvelous sounding piano is keeping itself silent now. “I must find out why is it that only Tom can play it. And how can he play it so well without any prior practice! Hmmm…”
“Hey Tom! I’m sorry about not believing you yesterday. Forgive me alright?” Nicole apologized. “Are you free? Come to my house now. We’re gonna attend my piano lesson together!”
“Really? For free right? Haha…” Tom followed her.
“Introducing Mr Kee, my piano teacher. He has a piano degree! You can learn a lot from him.”
“Alright first, let’s go through the notes. In the treble clef, this is the middle C note and this is ……………..”
*After 5 minutes*
“What are these… What am I doing…” Tom asked himself while he looked at the notes. The notes seemed to be flying around everywhere. “Ahhhh! Stop it. This is making me dizzy! I don’t wanna learn anymore.” Hopping to the sofa behind, Tom exclaimed in frustration and sat there sulking.
“Nicole, pay attention! Go practice your exam piece!”
Once again, Tom suddenly paid full attention to Nicole when he heard her playing. Closing his eyes, he fully appreciated the piece.
“Great as usual. You are going to get your Grade 8 for sure.” Mr Kee smiled at Nicole.
“Sir, what’s this piece? Can I try it?” Tom asked earnestly.
“It’s La Campanella by Liszt. Are you sure you can do it? You can’t even read notes.”
Hopping on the piano bench, Tom closed his eyes. The melody filled his brain, fingers as though dancing on the keys, his hands played…
Eyes wide open, Mr Kee was shocked. “This piece was a diploma piece in the past and they shifted it to Grade 8 for a more stringent exam. Lots of fast moving finger techniques are required. How is he able to play it exactly like Nicole after hearing it once; and with his eyes closed!?”
